This week, Serge Mariani tells us about the American jazz singer, Catherine Russell. After putting her talents to use, in the service of David Bowie in the group that accompanied him in the early 2000s, Catherine decided to dedicate herself entirely to the production of her own albums. From “Cat”, the first of her 7 albums, to “Alone Together” which was just released by Dot Time Records, she devoted her life as a musician not only to the performance but, we can say, to the reinvention of standards and even very little known and forgotten songs of the great American jazz songbook. This is precisely what is involved with the titles of this 7th album that gives the music of Louis Armstrong a new and eternal youth, as a tribute to Catherine’s father Luis who was the musical director of Satchmo.
