Ian MacGregor, Jazz Guitar Society of Western Australia

This is brazilian guitarist and composer Flavio Silva’s second album and he is accompanied by a talented line up. He incorporates American jazz with both African and Afro Brazilian sounds which makes for interesting music. Flavio has written all the tunes except for Chico Bauarque’s “Samba de Amor” a gentle samba on which Flavio solos with great sensitivity and also has a fine solo from Seamus Blake. “Brooklyn Bound” is a fast paced jazz tune on which the guitarist lets loose. “Royal Song” incorporates the talents of vocalist Michael Mayo who scats Brazilian style all through the tune giving an authentic Brazilian feel to the tune followed by a Seamus Blake solo. This is a very good effort from an up and coming Brazilian guitarist now resident in New York.
