Christian Sands Quintet

Since his early career as a breathtaking piano prodigy employed in the great Christian McBride’s trio and Inside Straight band, the consummate Christian Sands blossomed into a mature and established voice in jazz. With his 2020 release Be Water, Sands garnered an NAACP Image Award win and a Grammy nomination. Sands is a Steinway Artist and an American Pianists Association Jazz Fellowship Awards Finalist. He brings his 4-piece group for the week at the jazz club.

“Accentuate The Positive” Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday in Song
A special group assembled from modern young masters of swinging music, “Accentuate The Positive” is an optimistic declaration for America on the weekend of its 250th birthday. Vocalist pianist Robbie Lee, drummer Bryan Carter, vocalists Angela Grey, Olivia Chindamo, and Wyatt Michael, clarinetest Felix Peikli, and bassist Liany Mateo will perform in memory of the beloved clarinetest Ken Peplowski—one of the world’s greatest contemporary swing clarinetists and one of Birdland’s most esteemed artists-in-residence whose recent passing deeply pained the jazz world. This group presents a powerful joyful noise on American Songbook repertoire this July 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Lee has been featured with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; Carter is a multiple Grammy-, Tony-, and Emmy-winner; Peikli is the artistic director of the Norwegian Jazz Orchestra; Chindamo is a globally-recognized talent and Juilliard graduate; Michael was mentored by Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson on NBC’s The Voice; Grey leads the house band at Duc Des Lombards in Paris. Dan Block Quartet
Saxophonist and clarinetist Dan Block’s big sound and swinging sensibilities have placed him in orchestras led by Maria Schneider, Toshiko Akyoshi, David Berger, Ken Peplowski, and Wynton Marsalis. Block honed his talents over the years with jazz greats Tom Harrell, Frank Wess, Jack McDuff, Harry Allen and Richard Wyands—and this deep experience in jazz music, built over many years amidst the music’s best, shines in his performances. A seasoned accompanist to vocalists, he has backed up Bobby Short, Michael Feinstein, Rosemary Clooney, Anne Hampton Calloway, Catherine Russell, and Tony Bennett. Block has performed in over 30 Broadway shows and a number of motion pictures, including The Aviator, The Good Shepherd, Revolutionary Road, and the HBO series Boardwalk Empire (dir. Martin Scorsese). Block is a consummate professional—as the legendary Frank Wess remarked, “Dan Block always sounds good whatever the call.” He brings a quartet to Birdland Theater.

Miss Maybell & Her Ragtime Romeos
Miss Maybell plays “old music for the young at heart,” and it’s a sight to behold. Offering an exuberant mix of ragtime, early jazz, blues, and country classics, Maybell (the talented Lauren Sansaricq) and crew transport audiences to a different time, but in their expert hands, the music feels as fresh as ever. Vocalist, washboardist, banjoist and guitarist Sansaricq provides “plenty of bluesy feeling” (LA Jazz Scene) and her lovely connection with her partner the pianist Charlie Judkins—called a “genius piano player” by the Syncopated Times—radiates an infectious energy. Their toe-tapping romps will leave audiences smiling. Brian Nalepka provides a thumping low end on bass and tuba, with Andy Stein on violin and Dan Levinson on clarinet and saxophone to round out the group. A vivacious ensemble, the band was featured on The NPR Show Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen. Don’t miss this delightful one-nighter!

Camila Meza Band
A captivating artist who has performed across the world with jazz’s leading voices, the guitarist and vocalist Camila Meza will wow you both with the profundity of her guitar playing and the beauty of her singing, both drawing deeply from jazz, pop, rock, and world music traditions. The New York Times has praised her “appealing combination of lightness and depth” and her “bright, clear voice,” calling her guitar improvising “serious business” and her band “first-rate.” With six albums to her name including her latest, 2025’s Portal (Ground UP Music), Meza has long been a beloved voice in the New York jazz scene and beyond, receiving praise from Village Voice, The Wall Street Journal, and Downbeat Magazine, which ranked her #1 Rising Star Female Vocalist in 2022. Respected by some of the greatest in the field, Pat Metheny chose Meza to serve as Musical Director for his NEA Jazz Masters induction at the Kennedy Center in 2018; Birdland favorite Ryan Keberle features her as a member of his All-Ears Orchestra; and she has performed with modern greats Fabian Almazan, Aaron Goldberg, Sachal Vasandani, Paquito D’Rivera, and many others. Meza released her fifth album, Ambar, on Sony Music Masterworks. She has performed at The North Sea Jazz Festival, Blue Note Tokyo, NPR’s Tiny Desk, and PBS’s Jazz Night in America. A singular artist, she brings her group to the upstairs stage for two nights.

Emilie-Claire Barlow
Emilie-Claire Barlow has released her latest recording: La plus belle saison, a love letter to her native Québec. Hailing from a musical family, Barlow is the recipient of 2 Juno awards, 7 Juno nominations, and a Félix award, winning the Best Jazz Vocal award in 2013 and 2016 for her albums Seule ce soir and Clear Day, and Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2008 National Jazz Awards. Her work—a fusion of popular song and the alluring musical textures of Brazil and France, all delivered with her smooth and sultry voice—has received nearly 150 million streams on Spotify and nearly 170 million on Pandora. In addition to her musical success, the brilliant and multitalented Barlow has kept a long career as a television actor, starring on hundreds of TV show episodes playing long-running characters on such beloved series as Sailor Moon, Almost Naked Animals, Numb Chucks, and Fugget About It. She released her 13th full-length album, Spark Bird, in the spring of 2023, celebrating the recording’s premiere and her NYC debut at the Birdland Theater; she returned this past November for a full weekend of performances, and the Theater is happy to have her back this July for a four-night run.

Pasquale Grasso Quartet
Praised by Pat Metheny as “maybe the best jazz guitar player I’ve heard in my entire life,” the stunning guitarist Pasquale Grasso is one of the most beautiful and innovative musical voices of a generation. Grasso’s eloquent classical technique, jazz phrasing, bebop rhythms and nimble fret fireworks have distinguished him as a celebrated 21st century virtuoso. He has recorded 11 albums on the Sony Masterworks label, showcasing Grasso in solo-guitar format; and he performed on the 2x-Grammy-winning Samara Joy’s two recordings, Linger Awhile and Samara Joy. Myles Weinstein presents Unlimited Myles
Beloved in the jazz industry as a booking agent and manager to some of the industry’s best including Regina Carter, Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, Luciana Souza, Vijay Iyer, and Russell Malone, Myles Weinstein built a career supporting the careers of others. For this Sunday evening performance, though, he steps onto the stage again himself. An accomplished drummer who has recorded toured and co-led albums with Chris Potter (Maxwell’s Torment and Show Business Is My Life), contributed percussion to Stefon Harris’s Grammy-nominated The Grand Unification Theory, and performed with Steve Turre, the Joffrey Ballet Orchestra, and many others, Weinstein is serious business behind the kit. He has assembled a top-tier cast for this one-time performance: Sean Jones, trumpet; Steve Wilson, saxophones; Billy Childs, piano; Matt Penman, bass; and Alicia Olatuja, vocals. Pour the champagne and escape to the City of Light and amour as award-winning chanteuse Karen Akers (Nine, Grand Hotel) sweeps you away with the music of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, and a mélange of other favorites, and culminates in a deeply personal remembrance of time spent in Piaf’s former apartment, closing with the iconic “Non, je ne regrette rien.” Reuniting with her longtime musical director Alex Rybeck for one-night-only, Karen Akers—one of America’s most arresting and successful concert and cabaret stars—is the recipient of the 2005 New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Female Cabaret Vocalist in a Major Engagement, as well as the 2009 Nightlife Legend Award. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall and The Hollywood Bowl, as well as New York’s premiere nightspots, the Cafe Carlyle and The Oak Room at The Algonquin Hotel. Frank Catalano Quartet
Possessing a full-bodied tone and a passion for hard-hitting lines, Frank Catalano’s famed tenor saxophone power has taken him across the world and landed him on Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated recordings with Jennifer Lopez, Destiny’s Child, John Legend, and others. Recent highlighs as a coveted guest artist include playing a 7-minute improvised sax solo at The Hollywood Bowl with The Smashing Pumpkins, closing out the Chicago Blues Festival with Los Lobos, and performing with Les Claypool, Sean Lennon, and the Violent Femmes. Allan Harris: Harlem After Dark featuring Maya Azucena & AC Lincoln
Enjoy the rich baritone voice of Allan Harris, whose luxurious balladry and bluesman slickness make him one of jazz’s leading men. With 16 albums as a leader, Harris has been prodigious throughout his career, and he counts among his highlights performances at festivals and halls in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, as well as at the 2012 London Olympics. At home, he has toured nationally and performed at top venues such as New York’s Lincoln Center and D.C.’s Kennedy Center. Harris is also an accomplished guitarist. A three-time recipient of the New York Nightlife Award for “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” and the DownBeat Critics Poll Award for “Rising Star Vocalist,” this distinctive artist brings his storied life into each song. For this weekend of performances at the Theater, Harlem After Dark, he brings aboard two talents: tap dancer and singer AC Lincoln and vocalist Maya Azucena. Lincoln has shared the stage with tap dance greats including Buster Brown, Jimmy Slyde, and Savion Glover, as well as with The Hot Sardines, Mercedes Ellington, and trumpeter Brian Newman. Azucena has collaborated with Marcus Miller, Stephen Marley, Livin Color’s Vernon Reid, Brass Against, DJ Logic, and Immortal Technique.

Jon Gordon Nonet
With 14 albums as a leader to his name, and nestled in long-term company with some of the music’s greatest practitioners, Jon Gordon is a powerful force in saxophone whose agile 9-piece ensemble is sure to excite audiences. Gordon, a mentee of legendary Phil Woods and the 1st place winner of the Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition in 1996, is known for his virtuosic technique, his rooted and soulful explorations, and his intellectual modernity. His latest recording, Stranger Than Fiction, was selected as one of 2021’s top 10 jazz releases by Hot House, Jazziz, Cadence, and The Winnipeg Free Press. Wayne Shorter stated, “Gordon has embraced the history of his instrument, carrying with it the ability to extend music as a universal language,” and All About Jazz calls him “easily one of the top alto saxophonists of his generation.” His New York appearance is not to be missed.

An Evening with Liz Gillies
Liz Gillies brings her rich, expressive voice to Birdland Jazz Club for a one-night-only celebration of the Great American Songbook, modern standards, and contemporary gems. Fresh off her acclaimed run in Little Shop of Horrors, Gillies offers soulful, shimmering interpretations of jazz classics, including songs made famous by Peggy Lee and Nancy Wilson, reflecting her lifelong passion for classic American song. Known for blending sophistication, warmth, and contemporary style, Gillies has captivated audiences across stage, screen, and studio, starring as Fallon Carrington on Netflix’s Dynasty and Jade West on Nickelodeon’s Victorious. She made her Broadway debut at fifteen in 13, later starring opposite Denis Leary in FX’s Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. An accomplished vocalist, Gillies has released two albums with longtime collaborator Seth MacFarlane and unveiled two new singles in 2024. Drummer extraordinaire Gerry Gibbs has performed with the greatest names in music, including McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Alice Coltrane, Patrice Rushen, Sarah Vaughan, Roy Hargrove, James Moody, and so many others. The son of famed bebop vibraphonist Terry Gibbs, drummer Gerry grew up inside the world of jazz. His own recordings have garnered many awards, including #1 spots on national and international jazz radio charts and a 2014 Grammy nomination for his Thrasher Dream Trio. Gibbs’s technical prowess, modernist edge, and deeply tradition-steeped approach make him one of jazz’s most exciting drummers to watch. Dan Wilson & Peter Bernstein Quartet
Birdland Theater welcomes two virtuoso guitarists for a special weekend engagement: Dan Wilson and Peter Bernstein. Raised in Akron, Ohio and shaped by the church music tradition, Wilson blends gospel, blues and hip-hop influences with the guitar lineage of Wes Montgomery and George Benson, and his work with Joey DeFrancesco earned a GRAMMY nomination, while his own recordings have drawn on collaborations with Christian McBride and René Marie, among others. Bernstein, a New York native active since 1989, is celebrated for his warm tone and lyrical swing, with over 200 sideman credits alongside Sonny Rollins, Brad Mehldau and Lou Donaldson; for this engagement, his quartet features Aaron Goldberg (piano), Doug Weiss (bass) and Kush Abadey (drums). Together, Wilson and Bernstein bring their distinct voices to the Theater stage for a rare shared performance.

Arcoiris Sandoval Sonic Asylum Trio
Arcoiris Sandoval brings her Sonic Asylum Trio to Birdland Jazz Club. Founded in 2016, Sonic Asylum is Sandoval’s primary vehicle for her original music and arrangements, featuring a rotating cast of top New York talent across trio, quartet, and quintet formats. The project has appeared at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, NYC Winter Jazzfest, the Kennedy Center, and Martha’s Vineyard Jazz and Blues Summerfest, and a 2024 South Arts Jazz Road grant supported a national tour. Her debut trio album First Voyage won a Global Music Award in 2018, and her composition “Journey to Agartha,” published in Terri Lyne Carrington’s “New Standards” collection, was recently recorded by George Cables. A Fulbright award recipient praised by Cables and Benny Green, Sandoval has also arranged and toured with vocalist Allan Harris. She’s joined at Birdland by Mimi Jones on bass and Jerome Jennings on drums.

Max Pollak Group
Max Pollak Group takes the stage at Birdland Jazz Club, led by percussive dancer, vocalist, and composer Max Pollak in a genre-blurring set that weaves tap, body percussion, and Afro-Caribbean rhythm into jazz chamber music. An Austrian-born innovator with over 25 years of experience treating the body as an instrument, Pollak has performed at venues including Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Amsterdam’s Dutch National Opera, alongside artists such as Ray Brown, Chucho Valdés, and Danilo Pérez. He is featured on a USPS Forever Stamp honoring tap dance and co-created the Off-Broadway show Carmen – To Havana and Back. His new album Viis arrives this July. For this performance, Pollak is joined by Nicki Denner on piano, Jennifer Vincent on bass, Felipe Fournier on vibes, Samuel Torres on percussion, and dancers Camila Aldet, Claudia Rahardjanoto, and Nicholas Young, for an evening reimagining rhythm as sound and movement.

Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes
In a rare two-piano performance, this is a husband-wife duet you simply will not want to miss! Both undeniable leaders in music for the past thirty years, Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes have collaborated for the last several decades with jazz’s foremost artists. Charlap’s working trio (with drum and bass stars Kenny Washington and Peter Washington) has earned him years of accolades; Rosnes’s various groups (with 10 releases on Blue Note Records) have earned her the same. But they also shine as duet performers: Charlap in particular is known for duets with Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Ron Carter, and his mother, Sandy Stewart. He and Rosnes released Double Portrait (Blue Note) in 2010, 16 years ago, and they united on stage last summer for a week at Birdland to rave reception. Watch these two masterful musical minds join together again for a week of song and improvisation.

Miki Yamanaka Trio
One of the best jazz piano players working in New York today, Miki Yamanaka is the favorite of Antonio Hart, Roxy Coss, Larry Goldings, Frank Lacy, Philip Harper and a cast of other revered musicians. In possession of a powerful and elegant style, she maintains deep roots in the tradition of jazz piano while reaching far beyond mere cliche. During the pandemic, Miki launched “Miki’s Mood,” which became a popular livestream series from her apartment featuring husband and frequent collaborator Jimmy Macbride on drums with a host of New York’s most amazing musicians joining in. She released Miki in 2018 (Cellar Live), Human Dust Suite in 2020 (Outside In), and Stairway to the Stars in 2021 (Outside In) featuring the great bassist Orlando Le Fleming and modern saxophone legend Mark Turner. In 2023 she released Shades of Rainbow (Cellar Live) with Tyrone Allen and Jimmy Macbride, and Mark Turner, and continued with a trio release entitled Chance in 2024, also on the Cellar Live label; this summer, she will release Breathe with her trio and the addition of saxophonist Nicole Glover.

Frank Vignola’s virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Les Paul, the Boston and New York Pops, and more. Every Wednesday at 8:30pm in the Birdland Theater, Frank leads “Frank Vignola’s Guitar Night at Birdland.” Inspired by journeyman jazz guitarist John Pisano’s now famous Los Angeles Guitar Night, the Frank Vignola Quartet, featuring guitarist Pasquale Grasso, bassist Gary Mazzaroppi, and drummer Alex Raderman, perform tunes from the standard repertoire, bringing in an assortment of special guests. Danny Tobias is a veteran trumpeter, long-established on the New York City jazz scene. Beloved for his collaborations with prolific swing artists such as Warren Vaché, Scott Robinson, Harry Allen, Rossano, Vince Giordano, David Ostwald, Gordon Webster, Terry Waldo, Dan Block, Jon-Erik Kellso, Kevin Dorn, the Midiri Brothers, Marty Grosz and Howard Alden, he is a top call on the horn—a frequent member of David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band, and a regular performer at Birdland, Mezzrow, The Ear Inn, and Zinc Bar. Tobias has four high-swinging albums to his name—Silver Linings, No One Else But You, Complete Abandon!, and Cheerful Little Earful—where he delivers artful improvisations influenced by Louis Armstrong, Ruby Braff, Buck Clayton and Chet Baker. Composed of a rotating cast of New York’s top talent, the orchestra will perform classics of the Latin jazz big band repertoire, showcasing the vibrant rhythms and sophisticated arrangements that define this legendary style—lifting spirits with their dancing beats, their buoyant harmonies, and the deep traditions they represent.
