The Bean Tones
Rising star vocal group The Bean Tones return to the city after their highly-successful New York debut this Monday, June 1st at 7 PM! Founded in 2018 at Berklee College of Music, the dynamic Los Angeles-based quartet began as a barbershop group and has since evolved into a forward-looking vocal jazz ensemble, with each member playing an instrument (brushes, guitar, trumpet, and bass) while delivering brilliant harmony. Their inventive arrangements, flawless blend, and infectious energy have drawn comparisons to legendary harmony groups like The Hi-Lo’s, The Four Freshmen, and even The Beach Boys. Riding a wave of viral success — including millions of views for their playful arrangement “A Trout No Doubt” — The Bean Tones have opened for the Four Freshmen at their annual convention and toured internationally, with stops including the Mt. Fuji Five Lakes Jazz Festival in Japan. With roots in tradition and eyes on the future, they’ve captivated global audiences and caught the attention of viral star Laufey—a fellow Berklee alum who shares their vision of making vocal jazz thrillingly modern and irresistibly cool. Sophisticated as it is fun, The Bean Tones’ music appeals to die-hard jazz aficionados and casual listeners alike. Don’t miss this chance to catch the band live!

Stacey Kent
Beloved vocalist Stacey Kent’s new recording, A Time For Love (naïve 2026), finds her revisiting the intimacy of duo performance—after the unique grandiosity of her last project, the critically-acclaimed The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain, a highly unique collaboration with Booker and Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro and Kent’s partner, the saxophonist and arranger Jim Tomlinson. A singer of marvelous talent, Stacey Kent’s beautiful voice and natural musicality have been the feature of nearly 20 studio albums, including Platinum, Double-Gold and Gold records that have garnered her a much-deserved worldwide audience clocking over 500 million streams. With performances in over 55 countries during her stellar career, Kent’s global fandom makes perfect sense: over the course of two decades as a recording artist, her miraculous fluency singing in French, Italian, German, Portuguese and English allows her to relate to audiences across cultural borders. Naturally, Kent’s vision has broadened beyond the Great American Songbook: French and Brazilian classics also feature prominently in her contemporary work. Her September 2021 album, Songs From Other Places, was released to critical acclaim; she released studio album Summer Me, Winter Me (naïve) in 2023. For this special week of shows, Kent is backed by her working group of veteran collaborators.

June 5-7 (Friday-Sunday) 7:00 & 9:30 PM – Birdland Theater
Scott Robinson Quartet
Virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson is widely hailed for his unique, eccentric approach and his powerful improvisations. The top call man for baritone saxophone, Robinson has worked with orchestras led by Maria Schneider, Frank Mantooth, Bob Mintzer and John Fedchock, but his skills on tenor sax, trumpet, clarinets, and even the mysterious sarrusophone are well-known. Having appeared on nearly 300 recordings to date—20 as a leader—Robinson’s music draws from a wide range of traditions. His works range from solo performance pieces to chamber and symphonic works; he’s written essays and liner notes, delivered invited speeches before the Congressional Black Caucus, and served as a Jazz Ambassador for the State Department. At once wry, humorous, magnetic, and profound, this is the rare musician from whom you don’t know what to expect—and it’s precisely that joy of surprise which makes Robinson so assuredly a wonder to watch perform, why The Boston Globe called his “the most quirky and delightful set” of the 2015 Newport Jazz Festival, and why his 2019 recording Tenormore was judged “Best New Release” by JazzTimes. He brings a quartet to Birdland for this engagement. With Scott Robinson (reeds/trumpet), Jim Ridl (piano), Dennis Mackrel (drums), Boris Kozlov (bass 6/5), Bar Filipowicz (bass 6/6), Russell Hall (bass 6/7)

The Michelle Lordi & Matthew Parrish Trio
Called “flawless” by DownBeat and “mesmerizing” by JazzTimes, vocalist Michelle Lordi has dazzled audiences across the United States with her captivating voice and contemporary vision. On 2019’s Break Up With the Sound, 2017’s Dream a Little Dream, and 2015’s Drive, Lordi creates moving sonic portraits that blend traditional songbook classics, pastoral folk soundscapes, and modern jazz sensibilities. For years she has performed this music at some of the nation’s top venues, including The Kimmel Center, Mann Music Center, The Deer Head Inn, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cornelia Street Cafe, Jazz Forum, Maureen’s, Mezzrow, Minton’s, Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, Dazzle, BluJazz, Bop Stop, Cliff Bell’s, Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, Pinelands Jazz Festival and Birdland. Hot House nominated her for three categories of their 2019 Readers Jazz Awards: Best Band, Rising Star and Female Jazz Vocalist. She performs for one night at the Birdland Theater with life partner Matthew Parrish, a sought-after bassist and composer who has provided the low end for such masters as Al Grey, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stefon Harris, Regina Carter, Freddy Cole, Houston Person, Wynton Marsalis, Orrin Evans, Marion McPartland, and many others. Lordi and Parrish’s latest co-leader outing is Live at Dirty Dog. “It is thrilling to make music and a life with Matthew,” says the vocalist. “Living together, raising children together, touring together, teaching together at Princeton University—you can feel this shared rhythm in the music we create.”

Bryce Edwards & Mike Davis: HOT COMBINATION
Vaudevillian troubadour Bryce Edwards (of Birdland’s critically acclaimed Frivolity Hour) and New York’s premiere “antimodernist” cornetist Mike Davis (of The New Wonders) are coming together to celebrate the centennial of one of jazz’s hottest overlooked duos! A one-night-only event. In the 1920s, Red Nichols—the mainstay of New York studio groups, beloved for his cool tone, inventive cornet language, and avant-garde arrangements—seemed, with his musical partner Cliff Edwards, to set up an alternate jazz future that never was. The ukulele-toting, mouth-trumpeting Edwards (who would later voice Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio) may seem like a jazz age oddity at first blush, but he was one of the era’s most innovative and jazz-forward pop vocalists and an early pioneer of scat singing (in his own inimitably bizarre way). In 1925, these two singular musical voices combined forces to make some of the most infectious records of the 20s, and now, one hundred years later, Mike Davis and Bryce Edwards are joining forces to pay tribute. Davis has lovingly transcribed selections from these hot sessions and has recruited Birdland favorite and unique vocalist Bryce Edwards to embody the bygone Edward’s signature humor, heart, and driving ukulele. At the helm of an all-star band of traditional jazz specialists, including Ricky Alexander on reeds, Josh Holcomb on trombone, Felix Lemerle on guitar, Dalton Ridenhour on piano, Jay Rattman on bass saxophone, and Colin Hancock on drums, this team will most certainly be a “Hot Combination.”

Jeff Harnar Sings The 1959 Broadway Songbook
On Monday, June 8 at 7pm, Birdland will present “Jeff Harnar Sings The 1959 Broadway Songbook.” The 1959 Broadway Songbook is a musical collage of the 21 musicals that were playing in New York in 1959. Gypsy, The Sound of Music, Fiorello, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Flower Drum Song, Bells are Ringing, and Once Upon a Mattress are among the shows in this tribute to an era some have called the twilight of The Golden Age of Broadway. Harnar—a multi-award-winning cabaret, concert and recording artist whose Carnegie Hall appearances include both the Cole Porter and Noel Coward Centennial Galas, and whose PBS televised concerts include “The 1959 Broadway Songbook” with Alex Rybeck; “American Songbook Live” from NJPAC: Stephen Sondheim; and “Remember: Songs of the Holidays” with KT Sullivan—first performed “The 1959 Broadway Songbook” as a one-man show for his 1991 debut at The Algonquin Hotel’s fabled Oak Room. The show was recorded live, televised (PBS) and has toured nationally and internationally. In it, you’ll hear the greatest of songwriters Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Harold Arlen & Yip Harburgh, Leonard Bernstein, Comden & Green, and Lerner & Loewe, all woven together: “Tonight,” “On The Street Where You Live,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Til There Was You,” “The Party’s Over,” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”

The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, today directed by Scotty Barnhart, has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 19 Grammy Awards (including 2024’s Best Large Jazz Ensemble), performed for kings, queens, and other world royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and major concert hall in the world. Harry Allen Quartet
The saxophonist that John Pizzarelli has called “Nothing less than perfect,” Harry Allen is the consummate swinger. A veteran of jazz music, Allen was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2024 and, in 2020, into the Jazz Monsters Hall of Fame at SOKA University of America. He has recorded over 70 discs as a leader—three of which winning Gold Disc Awards from Japan’s Swing Journal, and his album Tenors Anyone? winning both the Gold Disc and the New Star Award. Allen’s work with Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Flip Phillips, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis, John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Gus Johnson, Jeff Hamilton, Johnny Mandel, James Taylor, and Sheryl Crow—to name a few—places him in an elite class, but he is no snob: in fact, what makes Harry Allen so great is his down-to-earth playing, his love of the music. His off-the-cuff style needs no set-lists. For these three nights at Birdland, he is sure to start and end swinging. What happens along the way will undoubtedly be pure magic.

A Marvelous Party with Duchess – Album Release Show
Celebrate A Marvelous Party—the new album from acclaimed vocal trio Duchess! Named Vocal Group of the Year in both 2022 and 2021’s Jazz Journalists Association Awards, Duchess—the extraordinary vocal trio comprised of Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner, and Melissa Stylianou—has brought jazz cheer and swinging fun to audiences around the world since 2015. Each accomplished vocalists in their own right, the women of Duchess connect over their love of the 1930s New Orleans vocal group the Boswell Sisters. This adventurous group serves as their inspiration, and with these pioneers in mind, Duchess brings the close-harmony vocal trio concept squarely into the modern day. They are by no means derivative: these ladies perform original music and swing authentically with vibrant personality. 2017’s Laughing At Life (Anzic), 2018s EP Harmony for the Holidays, and 2020’s Live at Jazz Standard (Anzic) have been met with critical acclaim, including The New Yorker’s praise for their “fresh-voiced” and “straight from the heart” delivery—and Downbeat’s instruction that, “For a good time, call Duchess.” With their swinging band behind them, Duchess will have Birdland audiences in delight. The night will feature songs like “This Could Be the Start of Something Big,” “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” “It’s All Right With Me,” “Danke Schoen,” and “Is That All There Is.”

Every Friday, and for two headlining weeks a year, the “BBB” roars into action playing a thrilling and original mix of jazz, funk, Brazilian, Latin and world music for sold-out audiences. Featured weekly guest artists drop in from television bands (David Letterman, Saturday Night Live) and pop music touring bands (Rob Thomas, Rod Stewart). Come see for yourself why Time Out New York called the BBB “A completely unique experience… there isn’t another band like this anywhere,” and why yelp.com proclaims, “If you hear one band in NYC make sure this is it… and prepare to be blown away!”

Brandon Goldberg Trio
Award-winning pianist and composer Brandon Goldberg has been a remarkable talent since his early youth. He became the youngest recipient of the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award in 2022 at age 16; the youngest semifinalist a year later in the 2023 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition; and he has released three albums with the music’s heavy-hitters, including Brandon Goldberg Trio: Live at Dizzy’s (2024), In Good Time (2021), and LET’S PLAY! (2019), the last two of which received 4-star reviews in Downbeat. (The magazine praises his “unassailable technique, advanced harmonic understanding, deep sense of swing and…a clarity and plethora of ideas executed to near-perfection.”) Brandon has performed festivals worldwide including Newport Jazz, SFJazz, PDX Jazz, Twin Cities, Caramoor, Litchfield, NCPA Mumbai, Santander, and Ystad—as well as in New York’s best rooms including Dizzy’s Club, Smoke Jazz Club, Mezzrow, and Birdland. As a young child, Brandon appeared on national television in Seasons 1 and 2 of NBC’s Little Big Shots, The Steve Harvey Show, and the Harry Connick, Jr. show Harry—now he shares the company of masters. His trio performs American Songbook classics as well as Brandon’s smartly-conceived, sensitively-felt originals. Catch them at this Saturday early evening performance!
