Sergent, along with her 6-piece group, invites you on a storyteller‘s journey, performing classics like “La Vie en Rose,” “Non, je ne regrette rien,” and “l’Hymne à l’Amour.” Sergent has performed across Paris and at France’s legendary l’Olympia. Maria Schneider Orchestra
The legendary, groundbreaking composer and arranger Maria Schneider returns to Birdland this February. Ms. Schneider’s music, which has received 7 GRAMMY wins and 14 nominations across jazz, classical and arranging categories, is regarded as some of the most evocative work of our contemporary artistic world. In this week-long engagement, she performs her latest work, American Crow: A Narrative in Notes and Frames, which draws upon the composer’s lifelong love of birds, as well as childhood experiences with her family’s two pet crows that became public menaces and required, as it were, a kind of house arrest. Schneider’s last project, the double-album Data Lords (2020)—called “the most daring work of Schneider’s career” by esteemed critic Nate Chinen—was a Finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize, pitting the digital world against the natural one in musical form to warn listeners of the profound dangers of Big Data and reacquaint them with their essential lifeforce. Ms. Schneider—a living icon of music—recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of her debut recording, Evanescence, at Town Hall. Don’t miss this five-night engagement by a musical giant.

February 6-8 (Friday-Sunday) 7:00 & 9:30 PM – Birdland Theater
Helen Sung’s LiveWire Project
One of jazz piano’s brightest stars in the past 20 years, Helen Sung is a Guggenheim Fellow praised by The New York Times for her “crisp swing,” “elegant invention,” and “fresh ideas, often inspired from her classical training.” Sung brings an innovative band to Birdland Theater this February for a weekend of performances with her LiveWire Project, featuring drummer Kush Abadey, saxophonist John Ellis, bassist Vincente Archer, and Wendel Patrick, a DJ. The pianist’s career, which began with years of classical study in her Texas youth, took a turn when she discovered jazz while attending the University of Texas at Austin. Her subsequent successes—earning the piano chair in the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute, winning the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition, and then performing with jazz giants Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Regina Carter, Ron Carter, Cecile McLorin Salvant, the Mingus Big Band, Terri Lyne Carrington and others—have cemented her name in the contemporary jazz landscape. Long a boundary-breaker, the ever-searching Sung has a talent for bridging divides. She combines music with neuroscientific research to promote healing (through Columbia University’s Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute) for those living with dementia; she platforms underrepresented artists (through her “Re-Orientation: Asian American Artists Out Loud” series in collaboration with Chamber Music America); and she has created hybrid works like her last release, Quartet+ (Sunnyside, 2021), featuring the string quartet Harlem Quartet and produced by violinist Regina Carter. Don’t miss Sung’s brilliantly uncommon group as they explore for the weekend. *Live Wire Project (Jazz Plasticity) by Helen Sung and the Helen Sung Group has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works program funded through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Danny Jonokuchi Big Band feat. Lucy Yeghiazaryan
A trumpeter, composer, and arranger extraordinaire, the superb Danny Jonokuchi leads a bi-coastal 17-piece big band packed with New York’s legends and rising stars. In July of 2024, the band celebrated the release of A Decade, their latest recording, which commemorated the bandleader’s ten year milestone living and working in New York City. The album won the ISJAC Wayne Shorter Arranging Prize for its song “Ping Pong”; and their 2023 album, Voices (Outside In Music) was hailed as “a masterpiece” by Jerry Gordon (WPRB). Solidly standing as one of the most authentically toe-tapping dance bands in the country, the group has performed to sold-out crowds in Los Angeles and New York City at preeminent venues: Lincoln Center, Birdland Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club, Vibrato, The Django, Minton’s Playhouse, Vitello’s, Catalina Jazz Club, The Ziegfeld Ballroom, and Gotham Hall. They were also featured at the Jazz at Lincoln Center 2024 Gala and contributed their award-winning recording of “One O’Clock Jump” to the Late Night Basie album. Unanimously named winner of the inaugural Count Basie Great American Swing Contest by a panel of noteworthy judges including Christian McBride, Branford Marsalis, and Mark Ruffin, this swinging band counts Birdland vocal favorites Nicole Zuraitis, Catherine Russell, and Sara Gazarek as collaborators. They are joined by featured guest vocalist Lucy Yeghiazaryan—herself one of the finest interpreters to emerge from the New York City scene in recent times. A favorite of her peers and elders alike, including master pianist Johnny O’Neal (who has called her “as smooth as maple syrup on pancakes”), veteran trumpeter Joe Magnarelli (who deems her “a breath of fresh air”) and the delightful Emmet Cohen, who has hosted her on his show Emmet’s Place many times.

A fourteen-time MAC Award winner, two-time Backstage Bistro Award recipient, and Nightlife Award honoree, Douglas reunites with her longtime friend and music director Brian Nash (Silence! The Musical; Audra McDonald; Jennifer Holliday) and band to debut this vibrant new program. Through iconic songs by Roberta Flack, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Donna Summer, The Commodores, and a few unforgettable one-hit wonders, Douglas and her musicians journey through the sights, sounds, and social shifts of the 1970s—from bell bottoms and disco to cultural upheaval and transformation. Hailed internationally, Douglas has earned multiple five-star reviews in London. Writing in The Times (UK), Clive Davis praised her “pure energy, playfulness and heart-on-sleeve emotion.” A longtime Birdland favorite, Douglas has produced more than 80 concerts at the club, her musical home.

Catherine Russell
It’s Valentine’s week with Catherine Russell! Internationally-renowned vocalist Catherine Russell is jazz royalty. Her grandfather, Elisha Ray, graduated from Juilliard in 1925 and performed with Harlem Renaissance legend James Reese Europe. Her mother, vocalist Carline Ray, toured with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and attended The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music in the 1950s. And her father, Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s musical director. Born into the music, Ms. Russell possesses an easy feeling and genuine soulfulness, documented on seven acclaimed recordings under her own name and over 200 recordings for and with other major artists. Her latest recording, My Ideal (2024, Dot Time) with pianist Sean Mason, earned the Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album, joining 2019’s Alone Together and 2016’s Harlem on My Mind which received the same distinction. Russell’s style tastefully mixes early Harlem jazz stylings and American Songbook gems with New Orleans music and country blues stylings. Russell is a Valentine’s staple at Birdland. Fittingly so—since, after her every performance (Valentine’s or not), the feeling of romance stays hanging in the air. With Matt Munisteri (guitar) Tal Ronen (bass) Ben Paterson (Piano/Organ) Domo Branch (drums). February 10-11 only: Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet) Evan Arntzen (reeds) John Allred (trombone)

Ethan Iverson Trio w/ Buster Williams & Billy Hart
Ethan Iverson came to prominence in the early 2000s as the pianist in the iconoclastic trio The Bad Plus, a group famed for its legendary explorations into genre cross-pollination and an experimentalism with style that connected with a new generation of music listener. But the pianist’s success has included many other expeditions, including a long-time post in the quartet of Billy Hart, the Miles Davis/Herbie Hancock drummer; work with legends Ron Carter and Albert “Tootie” Heath; recordings with Mark Turner, Tom Harrell, and Jack Dejohnette; and significant works of both program curation (Duke University’s Thelonious Monk Centennial Celebration) and jazz scholarship (his popular blog “Do The M@th). In this three night engagement at the Theater, Iverson reassembles a profound configuration in which he has spent considerable time: trio with legends Buster Williams on bass and Billy Hart on drums, two of the most recorded, influential instrumentalists of the past 60 years. As the pianist cautions: “Expect the unexpected!”

Mike Davis and the New Wonders
Ever since he set foot in New York City as a teenager, the “eloquent trumpet prodigy” Mike Davis (Wall Street Journal) has had the ears of his contemporaries, his elders, and his audiences. But it was two years into his study at Manhattan School of Music before he encountered, firsthand, the visceral joy of early traditional jazz—and once he did, Davis was hooked. A decade and a half later, the trumpeter, cornetist, and bandleader is one of the New York trad jazz scene’s most beloved practitioners, his playing, speaking, and even his clothing all inflected with a prohibition-era speakeasy cool, invoking the world and music of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke. The leader of the New Wonders (named for Beiderbecke’s cornet model), and a member of Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band, the Lovestruck Balladeers, and the bands of Dandy Wellington, Glenn Crytzer, Terry Waldo, Dan Levinson, and many other traditional jazz and swing bands, Davis has earned praise from The New York Times and Downbeat, and his commitment to excellence shines through in every performance. Step into the world that the New Wonders reopen, and prepare to dance to numbers like “I’d Rather Cry Over You (Than Smile at Somebody Else)” and “She’s Funny That Way,” or “I’m Walkin Between the Raindrops.”

Nicole Henry in “What We Desire”
Singer Nicole Henry and her band return to Birdland, this time with “What We Desire.” The New York Times, Miami Herald, and Jazz Times Magazine have compared the powerhouse jazz vocalist to Sarah Vaughan, Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston for her dynamic range, impeccable phrasing, and ability to connect to a lyric. Whether burning up a swing tune or gently caressing a ballad, Henry—named Vocalist of the Decade by BroadwayWorld Miami—makes each song uniquely her own, “aim[ing] right for the emotional center” (Billboard). She celebrates a 20-year recording career with 8 critically acclaimed chart-topping CDs, a Soul Train Award for “Best Traditional Jazz Performance,” and four Top Ten Billboard placements, and even a Nicole Henry Day in Miami for her ongoing legacy. Hot House Jazz said, “few voices can set a listening room on fire, then let it burn into a cinder like Nicole Henry’s.” An all-star cast backs her up: the greats Shedrick Mitchell on piano, Richie Goods on bass, Mike Piolet on drums, and Jean Caze on trumpet. Expect uncommonly played gems like “All the Way” alongside the 1970s hit “So Good, So Right” as Henry delivers a passionate and joyful evening in honor of what is perhaps humanity’s deepest desire: to be loved.
