Emmet Cohen Trio
Virtuoso pianist Emmet Cohen has taken the jazz world by storm. When the pandemic sent musicians and audiences into lockdown in March 2020, the already well-established pianist—Cole Porter Fellow of the American Pianists Association, 1st prize winner of the 2019 American Pianists Awards, Finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, and young collaborator of masters Benny Golson, Ron Carter, George Coleman, The Heath Brothers, and Christian McBride—decided to begin filming concerts from his Harlem apartment, calling them “Live From Emmet’s Place” and featuring his electrifyingly-swinging trio of bassist Russell Hall and drummer Kyle Poole with special guest friends. The series became an instant hit; his Youtube channel now boasts over 1000 videos with an accumulated 45 million views, and Emmet’s Place is a (literal) household name in jazz. For this week at Birdland, he presents the latest from his working trio.

Jeff Harnar Sings The 1959 Broadway Songbook
On Monday, October 6 at 7pm, Birdland will present “Jeff Harnar Sings The 1959 Broadway Songbook.” The 1959 Broadway Songbook is a musical collage of the 21 musicals that were playing in New York in 1959. Gypsy, The Sound of Music, Fiorello, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Flower Drum Song, Bells are Ringing, and Once Upon a Mattress are among the shows in this tribute to an era some have called the twilight of The Golden Age of Broadway. Harnar—a multi-award-winning cabaret, concert and recording artist whose Carnegie Hall appearances include both the Cole Porter and Noel Coward Centennial Galas, and whose PBS televised concerts include “The 1959 Broadway Songbook” with Alex Rybeck; “American Songbook Live” from NJPAC: Stephen Sondheim; and “Remember: Songs of the Holidays” with KT Sullivan—first performed “The 1959 Broadway Songbook” as a one-man show for his 1991 debut at The Algonquin Hotel’s fabled Oak Room. The show was recorded live, televised (PBS) and has toured nationally and internationally. In it, you’ll hear the greatest of songwriters Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Harold Arlen & Yip Harburgh, Leonard Bernstein, Comden & Green, and Lerner & Loewe, all woven together: “Tonight,” “On The Street Where You Live,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Til There Was You,” “The Party’s Over,” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”
