Legendary Canadian Guitarist Lorne Lofsky Announces <\/b>This Song Is New<\/i><\/b>, New Album Due out April 2, 2021 on Modica Music <\/b>

\n<\/b>The former Oscar Peterson Quartet member presents his first studio album in nearly 25 years\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Modica Music<\/b> is proud to announce the<\/span> April 2, 2021<\/b> release of <\/span>This Song Is New<\/i><\/b>, a rousing new recording from Canadian jazz guitarist <\/span>Lorne Lofsky. <\/b>A master guitarist known for his pianistic voicings and virtuosic skill,<\/span> Lofsky is considered one of Canada\u2019s great musical treasures. <\/span>This Song Is New<\/span><\/i> is his first recording as a leader in over two decades, and signals an exciting new page in Lofsky\u2019s illustrious career. Joining Lofsky is his tight-knit quartet made up of his longtime musical associates: <\/span>Kirk MacDonald<\/b> on saxophone (with whom Lofsky has played extensively since the early 1980\u2019s), bassist <\/span>Kieran Overs<\/b>, and drummer <\/span>Barry Romberg.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Born, raised and based in Toronto, Lofsky\u2019s career began when<\/span> Oscar Peterson<\/b> offered to produce his first record, <\/span>It Could Happen To You <\/span><\/i>(Pablo Records), in 1980. During the years that followed, Lofsky worked extensively in the Toronto area, and toured with the likes of renowned saxophonist <\/span>Pat LaBarbera<\/b>, and fellow guitarist <\/span>Ed Bickert<\/b>. Bickert and Lofsky\u2019s fruitful collaboration ran from 1983 through 1991 and produced two widely-acclaimed recordings including the well-known 1990 Concord release <\/span>This Is New. <\/span><\/i>In the mid-1990\u2019s, Lofsky gained further recognition as a member of the Oscar Peterson Quartet. From 1994-1996, Lofsky toured with Peterson\u2019s group at venues all over the world from Carnegie Hall to the Montreal Jazz Festival, and appeared on three recordings. Lofsky was <\/span>Chet Baker\u2019s<\/b> \u201cgo to\u201d Canadian guitaris<\/b>t – heavily featured on the legendary Jazz Trumpeter\u2019s 2000 release \u201cLive at the Renaissance II\u201d. His other notable collaborations include performances with Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Benny Carter, Joey DeFrancesco, Dave Holland, Rosemary Clooney and Clark Terry, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Lofsky has built a widely-respected reputation as a world-class player, he has also become known as a prominent and sought-after educator. Currently, he teaches at York University and Humber College in Toronto, has an extensive private teaching practice, and he has guest lectured at a plethora of top-notch institutions such as St. FX University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and McGill University in Montreal, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With a resume like Lofsky\u2019s, it may seem as though he has already accomplished all he set out to do, and it would be perfectly reasonable for him to rest on his laurels. That is, however, not the case, as the musician is on an unending journey of discovery and is consistently working to refine and evolve his sound. \u201cThere\u2019s always a new opportunity to discover something,\u201d Lofsky says. \u201cI\u2019m constantly trying to add more information to my vocabulary, to my skillset, knowing that when it\u2019s time to play, I can tap into that and do it in a way where it\u2019s completely unconscious.\u201d As revered journalist James Hale outlines in the album liner notes, Lofsky eschews outboard effects and pedals, preferring to focus on what he can pull from the strings with his own technique.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>While Lofsky is never far away from his guitar, composing is something more sporadic, which explains why it has been nearly 25 years since his last recorded work as a leader. \u201cI\u2019ve been concentrating on playing for most of my life,\u201d says Lofsky. \u201cBut every once in a while, I kind of go on this little \u2018mini binge\u2019 and I feel inspired to write something.\u201d That \u2018something\u2019 comes to life on <\/span>This Song Is New, <\/span><\/i>making Lofsky\u2019s long-awaited return all the more triumphant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The resulting work is a seven track collection featuring five new originals and stellar arrangements of Miles Davis and Victor Feldman\u2019s \u201cSeven Steps to Heaven\u201d and Benny Golson\u2019s \u201cStable Mates\u201d, expertly performed by this outstanding quartet.\u00a0 The bond between this foursome is so tight and intuitive, that the majority of the tracks on <\/span>This Song Is New<\/span><\/i> were cut in a single take. \u201cWe\u2019ve all played together in different sorts of incarnations for a long, long time. There\u2019s a lot of chemistry, a lot of trust. When we play, we don\u2019t really have to talk. It\u2019s like putting on four very well-worn baseball gloves; it\u2019s just, <\/span>go<\/span><\/i>.\u201d Originally meant to be a casual readthrough at Roberto Occhipinti\u2019s Modica Music Studio in Toronto, Lofsky had no intention of releasing the recording commercially until he heard the exceptional results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking at the material as a whole, the consistent thread throughout is Lofsky\u2019s quest to approach music in new ways, particularly when it comes to revisiting tunes like \u201cSeven Steps\u201d or \u201cStable Mates\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s in the time signature or the harmony. \u201cIt\u2019s not about emulating what I\u2019ve heard; it\u2019s about tapping into something the music suggests. I try to stay open to different things that might come to mind and open to new possibilities in my playing.\u201d On a song-by-song basis, his approach yields consistently fascinating results, with his open-eared philosophy inspiring his collaborators to dig deeply into their own imaginations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking over the entirety of this \u2018get-together with friends,\u2019 that wasn\u2019t originally intended for public consumption, Lofsky is characteristically torn between acknowledging the achievement, yet seeing it as one more step on a journey. \u201cIt\u2019s a jazz record. This is music that\u2019s instinctive. It\u2019s not a pop record, where the producer spends six months trying to get the right reverb on the snare drum, and the bassist records his parts separately. I\u2019ve put the last 46 years of my life, on a daily basis, into this. And I\u2019m not going to stop working on this, until I take my last breath.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This Song Is New<\/i><\/b> Track by Track Analysis by James Hale<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSeven Steps\u201d<\/b> has been recorded at least a couple of dozen times since Miles Davis released it as the title song of his 1963 album, and most have stuck to its original swing time. For Lofsky, the composition represents his ongoing challenge to recast standards in different meters, and with Romberg and Overs along for the ride, this loose-feeling take aptly illustrates how an interesting tune with sturdy \u201cbones\u201d can gain new lustre with an unexpected rhythmic approach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lofsky says<\/span> \u201cThe Time Being\u201d<\/b> refers to where his writing is today. \u201cI\u2019m writing tunes now that aren\u2019t necessarily associated with how I\u2019m typically looked upon: a straight-ahead jazz guitar player. I\u2019m writing because I want to challenge myself. Any recording is kind of a snapshot of where you\u2019re at in your musical\/personal life.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Like the late trumpeter Kenny Wheeler\u2014another Canadian instrumental icon Lofsky worked with\u2014the guitarist loves wordplay in the titles of his compositions. So, while <\/span>\u201cLive from the Apollo\u201d <\/b>nods to the legendary Harlem concert hall, it also alludes to astronaut Neil Armstrong\u2019s 1969 leap from the steps of the lunar landing module to the surface of the Moon, and to John Coltrane. \u201cIt\u2019s based on Coltrane\u2019s Giant Steps,\u201d with some alternate changes and interplays thrown in, and an alternate melody.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In his typically off-handed manner, Lofsky says<\/span> \u201cThis Song Is New\u201d<\/b> is \u201ckind of neat because it changes key partway through, but it doesn\u2019t seem like you\u2019re in a new key.\u00a0 I was thinking of \u201cThe Song Is You,\u201d so people might think it\u2019s based on that, but it\u2019s just the correlation in the title.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The puns continue with <\/span>\u201cAn Alterior Motif,\u201d<\/b> named for the altered harmony that abounds in the piece. \u201cThere\u2019s a sense of linear and thematic development, and you can really hear the melody unfolding.\u201d The performance has a beautiful tension between Romberg\u2019s drumming, MacDonald\u2019s languid opening solo, and the leader\u2019s short, thoughtful interlude bridging into a more rugged saxophone section.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lofsky\u2019s use of sly references reaches its zenith on the sprightly <\/span>\u201cEvans from Lennie,\u201d<\/b> which not only draws from pianists Bill Evans and Lennie Tristano but reaches out to recently departed saxophonist Lee Konitz as well. \u201cI was just messing with \u201cPennies From Heaven,\u201d and thinking of Tristano, Konitz, and Warne Marsh because they all wrote really great alternate lines to standard song forms. I studied with Konitz briefly in 1984, just to try to get more insight into melodic development when improvising. I learned that you have to know the melody of a song inside out, be able to juxtapose different parts of the melody, then re-phrase, embellish it, and elaborate on it.\u201d Simple, right?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, Lofsky downplays his Bossa Nova treatment of \u201c<\/span>Stable Mates<\/b>,\u201d although it sounds like a radical shift from the straight-up, post-bop takes of the song popularized by Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, and composer Benny Golson himself. \u201cI changed the chords. That\u2019s nothing to write about by any means, but I liked the fact that, as a Bossa, it has a very different vibe. And it kind of summarizes the way I\u2019ve been working at playing things in five or in seven, and feeling like those time signatures are not something I have to work up to anymore. I just instantly start playing it that way.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
