Ralph Peterson Passes the Torch with the Gen-Next Big Band; New Album <\/b>Listen Up! <\/i><\/b>Due out November 12th on Onyx Productions<\/b><\/p>\n

Onyx Productions<\/b>, the music label founded and spearheaded by iconic drummer, bandleader and Berklee professor <\/span>Ralph Peterson Jr.<\/b>, is proud to announce the<\/span> November 12th<\/b> release of <\/span>Listen Up!<\/i><\/b>, the second album from Peterson\u2019s <\/span>Gen-Next Big Band<\/b>.\u00a0 Following in the <\/span>Jazz Messenger<\/b> tradition of mentorship, the Gen-Next Big Band features an exciting lineup of some of <\/span>Berklee College of Music<\/b>\u2019s brightest young musicians and employs Blakey\u2019s signature two-drummer format.\u00a0 These young Berklee students are granted the opportunity to work alongside Peterson and special guest trombonist <\/span>Kuumba Frank Lacy<\/b>, two Jazz Messenger alumni. The Gen-Next Big Band will celebrate the pre-release of <\/span>Listen Up! <\/span><\/i>this\u00a0<\/span>Monday, October 7th, at Dizzy\u2019s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Listen Up! <\/span><\/i>showcases the excellence of this group of young Berklee players under the tutelage of consummate drummer Ralph Peterson, while celebrating the life and music of the legendary <\/span>Art Blakey<\/b>.\u00a0 As Peterson remarks, \u201c…all of the arranging, with the exception of \u201cThe Art of War\u201d and \u201cIn Case You Missed It\u201d\u00a0 was done by Berklee students. They demonstrate maturity, finesse, and exuberance as arrangers.\u201d The album embodies the spirit of the Jazz Messengers, embracing the didactic nature of Blakey\u2019s legendary institution as a means of bringing fresh enthusiasm to the music, and perpetuating the artform.\u00a0 \u201cBack in 1983,\u201d as Peterson recollects, \u201cArt Blakey called me to perform with the Jazz Messengers at the Boston Globe Jazz Festival. That concert was transformative in my life and now I have the opportunity to come full circle and extend that experience to these young musicians here.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After making their professional debut at <\/span>Scullers<\/b> in Boston in late 2017, the Peterson-led Gen-Next Big Band released their 2018 debut album <\/span>Remember Bu: Alive Vol. 4 at Scullers<\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/i> a live recording of the group which featured fellow Art Blakey alum <\/span>Donald Harrison<\/b>.\u00a0 A year later, the <\/span>Gen-Next Big Band <\/b>embarks on their very first studio album.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The album begins with a bang as the musicians blaze through a spirited arrangement of the <\/span>Curtis Fuller <\/b>composition \u201c<\/span>Arabia\u201d, <\/b>which debuted on 1961\u2019s <\/span>Mosaic<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0 From the first downbeat, one notices the precision of the ensemble. As the piece unfolds, the stunning interplay and impressive dynamic capabilities of the group become apparent; and at once, you\u2019re transported back to Blakey\u2019s classic sound.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Peterson blows some soulful muted cornet at the end of the piece as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second track, \u201c<\/span>Acceptance<\/b>\u201d, is one of two original compositions composed\u00a0 by bandleader Ralph Peterson which are featured on this release. This ostinato-driven post-bop conception features transcendent solos by trumpeter <\/span>Robert Vega Dowda, Flutist Joe Melnicove <\/b>and bandleader Ralph Peterson.\u00a0 The band is in full swing on <\/span>Bobby Watson<\/b>\u2019s \u201c<\/span>In Case You Missed It\u201d, <\/b>trading incendiary solos across the bandstand. The track features a beautiful lyrical solo by messenger Kuumba Frank Lacy and also features Peterson abandoning his drum set for a 2nd foray onto the cornet,trading with trumpeter <\/span>John Michael Bradford<\/b>. The album concludes with another Peterson original entitled \u201c<\/span>The Art of War<\/b>\u201d.\u00a0 This driving post-bop composition was arranged by <\/span>Todd Bayshore<\/b> and features spirited drum solo trades between Peterson and student Christian Napoleon, a celebration of the dual-drummer instrumentation that makes this release so special, harkening back to a time when Peterson found himself trading solos with Blakey himself.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Peterson\u2019s prolific recording career began in 1985 with the fabled <\/span>Blue Note <\/b>label, with whose house band, OTB (Out of the Blue) he performed as a drummer. He released six Blue Note albums as a leader of different combos, including the \u201cFo\u2019tet,” a quartet whose members have at various times included clarinetist Don Byron, saxophonist Steve Wilson, bassist<\/span> Belden Bullock<\/b> and vibraphonist <\/span>Bryan Carrott.<\/b> To date, Peterson has released over 20 albums as a leader.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His glittering curriculum vitae includes such names as pianists <\/span>Walter Davis Jr., Geri Allen and Stanley Cowell; <\/b>trumpeters<\/span> Terence Blanchard, Tom Harrell, Jon Faddis<\/b> and <\/span>Roy Hargrove<\/b>; saxophonists <\/span>Michael Brecker, David Murray, Branford Marsalis <\/b>and <\/span>Charles Lloyd <\/b>and vocalist <\/span>Betty Carter. <\/b>

A bandleader and educator for over 30 years and having played a significant role in launching the careers of<\/span> Sean Jones, Tia Fuller, Justin Faulkner, <\/b>and <\/span>Orrin Evans,<\/b> among many others. Since 2002, he has taught drums and ensembles at <\/span>Berklee College of Music<\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Peterson is also grateful and proud of the manner in which he has prevailed over physical and personal difficulties. He has lived his life \u201cdrink and drug-free” for more than 23 years now. He has survived colon cancer and Bell\u2019s Palsy in addition to multiple orthopedic challenges. He is an avid martial artist recently promoted to 5th Dan Black Belt.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2010, Peterson founded <\/span>Onyx Productions Music Label<\/b> and has released his own music on the label ever since. This project is his 10th on his label and 24th as a leader.<\/span>
