The Legacy Continues with Ralph Peterson and the Messenger Legacy<\/b><\/p>\n

When it comes to <\/span>Art Blakey<\/b>, there is no living drummer more suited to honoring his legacy than the incomparable <\/span>Ralph Peterson.<\/b> As the last drummer chosen by Blakey to play by his side in the <\/span>Jazz Messengers<\/b> Two Drummer Big Band, Peterson is tasked with the unique responsibility to carry forth Buhaina\u2019s torch and tradition.\u00a0 In his role of carrying on the Blakey tradition Peterson has put together a fiery ensemble featuring fellow alumni of the Jazz Messengers who continue to advance the cause of contemporary mainstream jazz as leaders in their own right.\u00a0 Fresh off the May 20th release of the critically acclaimed <\/span>Legacy: Alive Vol. 6 at the Side Door<\/b> which marked Blakey\u2019s 100th birthday, Peterson and the Messenger Legacy Band will be touring extensively throughout the summer and fall, highlighted by a performance at the <\/span>Newport Jazz Festival <\/b>this Saturday, August 3rd.\u00a0 The ensemble looks forward to recording a new <\/span>studio album in January,\u00a0<\/b>which will Donald Brown,\u00a0<\/strong>among others.<\/p>\n

Peterson is proud to present a new iteration of his <\/span>Messenger Legacy Band <\/b>which will feature saxophonist <\/span>Bill Pierce<\/b>, trumpeter <\/span>Brian Lynch<\/b>, bassist <\/span>Essiet Essiet<\/b>, and pianist <\/span>Zaccai Curtis<\/b> locked in with Peterson\u2019s firm downbeat, and will also feature an additional horn player on a rotating basis: <\/span>Donald Harrison<\/b>, <\/span>Robin Eubanks<\/b>, <\/span>Craig Handy, Donald Brown<\/b>. Pianist Anthony Wonsey<\/strong> will joins the ensemble for select dates as well. The decision to expand the ensemble in this way came from Peterson\u2019s desire to celebrate the many eras and configurations of the ever-rotating Jazz Messengers, mirroring the same grounded capriciousness that was a hallmark of Art Blakey\u2019s long standing ensemble\u2014 An expansion of Art Blakey\u2019s Legacy. The addition of Zaccai as well as pianist Anthony Wonsey, the only two members not to have played with Blakey personally, marks the \u201cpassing of the torch\u201d to the younger generation – something Blakey was known to do as he fostered young talent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce joined the Messenger front line in 1980, making his first appearances on Messenger Big Band Live at Montreux, Northsea and Album Of The Year records that introduced the world to Wynton Marsalis.\u00a0 Donald Harrison joined the messengers in 1982, and Robin Eubanks joined in 1987 alongside his brother Kevin. Trumpeter Brian Lynch and bassist Essiet Essiet were members of the final edition of the Jazz Messengers that played with Blakey until his death at the age of 71 on October 16th, 1990.<\/span><\/p>\n

The music on the group\u2019s most recent release, <\/span>Legacy: Alive Vol 6<\/i><\/b>, was culled from the voluminous Jazz Messengers discography of more than one hundred albums. It was recorded live at<\/span> The Side Door <\/b>in Old Lyme, Connecticut on October 12th and 13th in 2018, following the band\u2019s debut at Scullers in Boston the previous night, on what have been Blakey\u2019s 99th birthday.\u00a0 The group\u2019s performances of these classic compositions remain true to the Messenger style of no holds barred energized soloing on lyrical melodic lines with Peterson indefatigably stoking the flames employing the Blakey rhythmic lexicon of driving press rolls and rim shots, exciting tonally sophisticated tom-tom patterns, a relentless sock cymbal beat and ass kicking bass drum accents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the ensemble\u2019s performance at <\/span>Newport Jazz Festival<\/b><\/a> on August 3rd, the group will perform at the <\/span>Lesher Center for the Arts<\/b><\/a> on August 24th at 5pm and 8pm, and then at Phoenix Arizona\u2019s <\/span>Musical Instrument Museum<\/b><\/a> on August 25th, and next at <\/span>Dakota Jazz Club<\/b><\/a> in Minneapolis on August 27th.\u00a0 The ensemble will perform at <\/span>GMMC Digital<\/b><\/a> in Durham, North Carolina from Septemer 6th to 7th and will give a panel discussion at the <\/span>Walter E. Washington Convention Center<\/b><\/a> in Washington, DC on September 12th, followed by a performance at <\/span>The City Winery<\/span><\/a> on the same day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Messenger Legacy will perform at Pittsburgh\u2019s <\/span>Manchester Craftmen\u2019s Guild<\/b> on October 10th.\u00a0 On October 11th and 12th, the group will be performing and recording at Connecticut\u2019s <\/span>Side Door Jazz Club<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0 From October 17th-19th, the band will be playing at Baltimore\u2019s <\/span>Keystone Corner<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0 The group will travel to France for a performance at <\/span>Jazz En Tete<\/span><\/a> in Clermont-Ferrand on October 25th.\u00a0 On October 26th, the group will travel to Sweden for a performance at <\/span>Umea Jazz Festival<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 On November 9th, the group performs at\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cape May Jazz Festival<\/b><\/a>,\u00a0 On November 16th, the Messenger Legacy Band will perform at Philadelphia\u2019s <\/span>Kimmel Center- Annenberg Theater<\/b><\/a>, and on <\/span>May 1st to May 2nd, 2020<\/b><\/p>\n
