Born in Trieste, Italy in 1939, hugely popular trumpeter Enrico Rava is often credited as the musician that single-handedly brought Italian jazz to international attention. First brought into the spotlight by associations with Gato Barbieri and Steve Lacy, Rava has shared the stage with jazz legends such as Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, among others. Over one hundred albums bear Rava’s name, with thirty of them featuring Rava as leader. Rava’s most recent efforts, Rava On The Dance Floor (2012) and Tribe (2011) have garnered rave reviews, with AllAboutJazz calling Tribe “one of the strongest albums of Rava’s career”.
It is the Rava’s quintet on Tribe that will be joining him at The Berklee Performance Center. The group features an all-star cast of groundbreaking Italian musicians. Alongside Rava will be trombonist Gianluca Petrella whose project Indigo 4 was released on Blue Note. Along with Petrella will be pianist Giovanni Guidi, bassist Gabriele Evangelista and drummer Fabrizio Sferra.
The concert will begin with a set by Umbria Jazz Scholarship winner Sarah MacKenzie. Following Mackenzie, The Berklee Global Jazz Institute will continue the concert. The Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI) is a performance program designed to foster creativity and musicianship through various musical disciplines, with pianist and composer Danilo Pérez as its artistic director. The BGJI student ensembles will be joined by master bassist John Patitucci. Grammy winning Patitucci has become one of today’s most influential musicians and composers. He has released several remarkable albums as leader of his own groups and made notable contributions to renowned ensembles led by Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard and Danilo Pérez, to name only a few.
Following the BGJI, Enrico Rava will take the stage with his quintet to perform original music from Tribe. Awarded a perfect five out of five starts from the UK Guardian, reviewer John Fordham refers to the music of Tribe as “enchanting … luxuriant brass textures, alluring ballads, bursts of twisting postbop and memorable soloing.” The Enrico Rava Tribe is thrilled to perform at The Berklee Performance Center on Tuesday, June 11 at 8:15 PM. The concert promises to be full of invigorating and unique top Italian jazz.
Enrico Rava Tribe at The Berklee Performance Center is part of "2013 - Year of Italian Culture in the United States", organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the auspices of the President of Italy. The concert is co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Umbria Jazz, Regione Umbria, the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, and Professional Italians in Boston (PIB).
