With Alone Together, Catherine Russell celebrates her second GRAMMY® nomination in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category. This critically acclaimed release from Catherine Russell was released on March 1st, 2019 on Dot Time Records. The album sat atop the JazzWeek Radio Chart for five weeks in a row, entered the Billboard Jazz Chart at #6, has been heard on CBS Sunday Morning, and has generated rave reviews from Downbeat Magazine, Mercury News, WBGO, Jazz Journal, and other top-tier media outlets. Alone Together has cemented Russell’s place as the preeminent song interpreter of her day. Johanan Bickhardt, founding partner of Dot Time Records notes “Catherine Russell is an exceptional artist. She uses her instrument to transcend musical landscapes. She is a gift that just keeps giving, effortlessly releasing musical messages that balance the heart and soul of a lyric with a keen awareness of style and tonality… Dot Time Records is honored and privileged to have this extraordinary talent in our musical family.” This is the first GRAMMY® nomination for Dot Time Records. Russell previously won a GRAMMY® for her role as a featured artist on the Boardwalk Empire HBO-TV soundtrack in 2012, and received a Grammy nomination for her 2016 album, “Harlem On My Mind.”
“I am honored and so grateful to have Alone Together receive a Grammy nomination. I love the process of recording and I’m thankful to have a superb team of collaborators. I appreciate each and every one of you,” said Catherine Russell of her nomination.
On Alone Together, Russell reinvigorates rare gems and stalwart standards from the Great American Songbook, lending her voice to the compositions of Nat King Cole, Irving Berlin, Eddie de Lange, Jimmy Van Heusen, Al Dubin, Louis Jordan and Harry Warren. Alone Together features the core musicians of Russell’s touring band, including guitar virtuoso and musical director Matt Munisteri, pianist Mark Shane, bassist Tal Ronen, and drummer Mark McLean. Also featured on select tracks is trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist John Allred, tenor saxophonist Evan Arntzen, violinist Dana Ltn, violaist Eddy Malave, and cellist Marika Hughes.
For Brian Lynch, his two 2020 GRAMMY® nominations bring the artist to a total of six nominations throughout his fruitful career. In addition, Lynch won a GRAMMY® for his 2006 release Simpático. 2019’s The Omni-American Book Club: My Journey Through Literature in Music, released on Hollistic MusicWorks on August 29th, 2019, is an expansive album of music for large ensemble (“big band”) composed and arranged by Lynch and featuring his work as soloist alongside an all star cast of special guests including Regina Carter, Donald Harrison, NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman, GRAMMY® Award winner Dafnis Prieto, Orlando “Maraca” Valle, and Jim Snidero.
On The Omni-American Book Club, subtitled My Journey Through Literature In Music, Lynch connects his lifelong passion for reading and the books that have shaped his life with his original music. The books that have shaped Lynch’s consciousness, and thus his music, have been myriad, and his dedications for the music of The Omni-American Book Club reflect both the diversity and the focus of his reading interests.
Lynch’s “Crucible For Crisis”, an Afro-Caribbean jazz infusion featuring drummer/Grammy laureate Dafnis Prieto and virtuoso flautist Orlando “Maraca” Valle is nominated for Best Instrumental Composition.
Brian Lynch on his nominations: “I’m elated, ecstatic, and just plain blown away by my two Grammy nominations for The Omni-American Book Club! My thanks to all the musicians and other creative artists that made this project possible, my production and publicity team, and the authors and books that were the source of inspiration for this music. Congratulations to all of the Grammy nominees!”
Jazz icon Randy Brecker receives his 19th GRAMMY® nomination with his latest nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo on the composition “Sozhino” off of his recent release Rocks by Randy Brecker & NDR Big Band. Brecker has won 6 GRAMMY® awards over the course of his illustrious career. Brecker’s latest release Rocks features the Hamburg Jazz Orchestra with David Sanborn, Ada Rovatti and Wolfgang Haffner. Rocks came to fruition after 2 successful tours finding Randy Brecker fronting the NDR BigBand, (The Hamburg Radio Jazz Orchestra), with Arranger Jörg Achim Keller conducting his arrangements of Randy Brecker compositions from different periods of Randy’s career. Original Brecker Brothers Band front line member, alto saxophonist David Sanborn was brought in, along with Ada Rovatti on tenor and soprano saxophones, and world famous drummer Wolfgang Haffner. The end results are wonderfully organic big band arrangements which don’t alter the conception of the original ideas behind Randy Brecker’s compositions, but add to it in a most refreshing way. Along with the other incredible soloists who are regular members of the NDR BigBand, this CD is one that will stand the test of time.
