Louis Armstrong was a trailblazing jazz innovator and is still regarded as the idiom’s greatest, most influential trumpeter of all time. Despite its rather unprepossessing title, Louis Armstrong Live in Europe (4 Stars, Dot Time) is a significant release that has been sanctioned by Armstrong’s estate and is sourced from the trumpeter’s own personal recording archive. It presents two previously unheard in-concert performances (from Nice in 1948 and Berlin in 1952) both featuring Armstrong’s All-stars. The audio fidelity is very good, allowing the sparkling nature of Satchmo’s performances to shine through. Standouts include Royal Garden Blues and A Kiss to Build a Dream On, the latter highlighting Armstrong’s virtues as both a vocalist and trumpeter.
