In Brent Birckhead’s music, listeners find past, present and future expression. Baltimore born and raised, the alto saxophonist and multi-woodwind artist is part of a talented generation that cross-pollinates art forms – an emergent collective whose identity is at once passionately collaborative and defiantly individualistic. In his lines and across his compositions, Brent plays with an ever-present urgency; his artistry includes visual narratives, social stories and historical reflection. Alongside the release of of Birckhead (Revive Music), his first recording as a leader, Brent issued the video release for “The Mourning After.” Directed by Babatunde Salaam, the video presents community response to police shootings with tenderness and frank honesty. Brent’s band features Corey Wallace on trombone, Jonathan Michel on bass and Willerm Delisfort on piano.
