BUSHWICK PUBLIC HOUSE/JUNE 3RD
Soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome is a prime example of what a modern jazz musician can achieve, with his tone beautifully balancing post-bop characteristics and outside-the-box extended techniques. After cutting his teeth with trumpeters Donald Byrd, Terence Blanchard and others, Sam’s work took a giant leap with the release of Sam I Am. This inspired debut album captured his brilliant compositions as well as his approach to standard jazz repertoire. That approach has resulted in more than a dozen albums since, with his latest, Chaos Theory: Song Cycles for Prepared Saxophone, set for June 3 release. Singer Charmaine Lee and guitarist Joe Morris will join Sam in concert for an evening of improvised music that will no doubt exceed expectations and shine a light on the saxophonist’s creative output.
