Acclaimed Trumpeter, Composer and Arranger David Weiss Embarks Upon Spring Tour
with Sextet, Featuring Marcus Strickland and Myron Walden

Shows in: Los Angeles, Ft. Bragg, Half Moon Bay, Napa, Windsor,  Denver, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary

“The sextet skirts the outer reaches of straight-ahead jazz, innovating while drawing from tradition. The recording benefits from the familiarity and chemistry shared by the bandmates, creating a powerful, propulsive force. Weiss’ complex compositions, some featuring dark themes and dense harmonies, are balanced with compelling melodies.”
 -Sharonne Cohen, Jazz Times

Internationally-lauded David Weiss – recently featured by both Downbeat and JazzTimes – is thrilled to announce multiple live dates this month in California, Colorado and Canada. The post-bop trumpeter will be joined by Myron Walden on alto saxophone, Marcus Strickland on tenor saxophone, David Bryant on piano, Eric Wheeler on bass and E.J. Strickland on drums. Some personnel changes during the first week of shows will see appearances from Immanuel Wilkins (alto saxophone), James Mahone (alto saxophone), J.D. Allen (tenor saxophone), Josh Nelson (piano), Edward Simon (piano), Keith Saunders (piano) and Alex Boneham (bass).

Forming this sextet to explore new compositional concepts and styles, Weiss’ goal has always been to move jazz forward.  The sextet has released three CDss: Breathing Room, The Mirror, and most recently When Words Fail, which received critical acclaim from Downbeat, Jazzwise, Time Out New York, the Financial Times, and others. After touring extensively with Freddie Hubbard and the New Jazz Composers Octet (2000-2008) and The Cookers (2007 to present), the acclaimed trumpeter has decided to turn focus toward his Sextet by embarking on his first ever extensive North American tour with the group. They will be making stops in Los Angeles, Ft. Bragg, Half Moon Bay, Napa, Healdsburg,  Denver, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary.

Weiss, Walden, Strickland, Bryant, Wheeler and Strickland will bring this tour to a close with an April 28th performance at King Eddy, located at 438 9 Ave SE, Calgary, AB at 7:00pm.

In a jazz climate that rewards neo-conservative tributes and far-flung exercises in deconstruction, David Weiss has distinguished himself another way: through finding flexibility and innovation in music that has its roots in the mainstream. The trumpeter, composer, and arranger has had the opportunity to learn from some of the music’s quintessential figures by touring and/or recording with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver, Billy Harper, Bobby Hutcherson, Slide Hampton, James Moody, Tom Harrell, Louis Hayes, Muhal Richard Abrams, Christian McBride, Odean Pope, Geri Allen and Billy Hart among many others. Weiss is also an awarding winning composer and arranger having been awarded commissions by the prestigious Chamber Music America Doris Duke Jazz Ensemble Project: New Works Creation and Presentation grant in 2001 and the American Composers Forum’s Jerome Composers Commissioning Program in 2005. He also places annually in the Down Beat Critics Poll in the Rising Star Arranger category.
