Premiere: Henry Conerway III Reinterprets Jimmy Heath Classic “Gingerbread Boy” Off Forthcoming ‘With Pride For Dignity’ Album
Detroit-native Henry Conerway III released his debut album With Pride For Dignity today. Backed by pianist Kenny Banks Jr. and bassist Kevin Smith, the forthcoming 8-track album features Conerway’s brilliance as a composer with compelling original material like “Carvin’s Agreement” (named after legendary drummer Michael Carvin) as well as inventive arrangements of beloved standards including Jimmy Heath’s classic “Gingerbread Boy.”
Kicking off with an infectious vamp in 7/4 that slowly weaves its way into the timeless melody, the tune’s head then morphs into the heavy swing solo section buoyed by Smith’s near metronomic work on the low-end. Complete with a edge-of-your-seat performance from Banks accented by Conerway’s accents behind the kit, the trio’s studio rendition of “Gingerbread Boy” really makes you feel like you’re in the club watching these dudes play rather than listening from your laptop or smartphone. But as long as we’re on the topic of live performances, you will be given the chance to catch the Henry Conerway III trio perform at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola tonight as they celebrate the release of their debut record.
