Trumpeter Shunzo Ohno takes you back to the hip and funky days of CTI styled fusion on this upbeat session. He’s loaded with all stars Buster Williams/b, Billy Drummond/dr and Paul Bollenback/g as well as Clifford Carter/key, Cyro Babtista/perc and various guests on percussion and strings. Ohno’s got a laid back sound, and uses it well with the sweet toned title track and spacey “First Step.” Some pop pops up with World sounds and grooves as George Yamazawa adds vocals on the kinetic “Musashi” and the Spartan “Alone, Not Alone.” Electronic grooves are high stepping on “Easy Does It” and the rappy “Lea’s Run,” showing the urban side of jazz’s attraction. If you like some hip sounds, you’ll be saying “Oh, Yes” to “Ohno.”
